Mundane tasks are just that…mundane, boring, dull. Some you can ignore, but then there are those tedious jobs that you know you have to tackle but your enthusiasm is lacking. There is a way you can inject excitement into humdrum chores: Gamify them!
Gaming enthusiasts already know the adrenaline rush they get through gamification. The joys of leveling up, grabbing that secret power pack, smashing through the “Boss level”. You can apply the same energy to revolutionize how you approach tedious jobs.
In this article, I will show why gamification works so well and give you strategies for transforming mundane tasks into platforms of exhilaration and anticipation. Ready? Let’s press “Play.”
Why gamification works
You feel great if you have ever played a computer game and got an in-game reward. What has happened is that the success has released dopamine (a feel-good neurotransmitter) into your brain’s reward system. That spurs you on toward the next “rush”.
Gamification is effective because it draws on this physiological phenomenon so that boring tasks are more engaging and appealing. At the core of gamification’s success is self-determination theory which emphasises the importance of satisfying three major psychological needs.
1. Autonomy
You are in control of your actions and choices. For example, you can decide on the pace, strategy, or methods that will allow you to achieve your goals. This sense of autonomy boosts motivation because you are more likely to engage in a task when you feel your participation is voluntary and self-directed.
2. Competence
Through measurable progress (using points, levels, or badges), gamification enhances your sense of achievement. How many times have you gone back and tried to beat your High Score in a game, or pushed on through a challenging level?
Completing tasks and seeing tangible results reinforces your confidence and motivates you to keep going. That is, by gamifying tasks you get a sense of mastery.
3. Relatedness
Social connections are strengthened when you are in a team working together towards mutual goals. By introducing game elements into the project, it adds a touch of friendly competition or collaboration. Leaderboards, multiplayer challenges, or team-based achievements create a sense of community and belonging.
Therefore gamification turns boring tasks into something more playful. Your psychological systems are catered to through boosts of happiness and feelings of competence which feed into your motivational levels.
Gamification strategies
There is a range of options you can choose from to utilize gamification as a motivational tool. Whether it’s a points system, leveling up, a boss battle, daily streaks, or rewards, gamification adds a sense of adventure to those jobs that you are hesitant to start.
Just like any computer game, you can mix and match the components to create an overall approach that excites you.
Leveling up with points
This is one of the simplest gamification methods and it’s amazingly effective. You can assign points to each task, with the more difficult jobs being given higher points. As you gain enough points you can level up and give yourself a tangible reward. What that reward looks like depends on your level of creativity.
As an example, if you want to lose weight, you may decide a twenty-minute walk is worth 10 points, a healthy meal gives you 5 points, and a full-on workout is worth 50 points. Set a cutoff time in which you take the chance to add up the points. Is time for a reward? Do you get to level up or not?
“Big Boss” challenges
Those enormous jobs can be broken down into smaller chunks. Each microtask can be considered a “quest” for you to conquer as you progress toward the “Boss Round”. If you are feeling imaginative you can make a fantasy-themed map that tracks your journey.
The great thing about this strategy is that it changes your stress into excitement. That enhances both your problem-solving ability and resilience.
Have daily streaks and rewards
A lot of apps utilize the concept of daily streaks. If you miss a day you forfeit the benefits you have gained and need to start at “Day 1” again. It’s an effective means of keeping you motivated. I know that I feel frustrated every time I skip a day on one of my apps and need to begin again.
Making a similar daily streak system is as simple as marking off days on a calendar. Just like the apps, you can assign yourself escalating rewards such as small prizes for weekly streaks and bigger ones for an entire month completed.
Why this method works so well is that it utilizes the psychology of “loss aversion”. You don’t want to lose the reward you have set aside for yourself, therefore you remain committed to achieving your goal.
Randomised rewards
Introduce an element of surprise into your strategy through the idea of random prizes. Once you have finished and task, you could spin a prize wheel or pick a card to win rewards of different kinds. For example, if the idea of cleaning your house has you groaning, give your wheel a whirl to win a treat such as going out for a coffee, watching a movie, or having your favorite dessert.
The randomness of the rewards boosts motivation levels through anticipation, making the tasks feel more like you are playing a game rather than doing something boring.
Beat the clock
Looming deadlines can be like grey clouds hovering overhead, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a victim of the despondency. Gamify those cut-off dates by timing yourself on how long it takes to complete a task.
Once you have your initial time, see if you can beat it next time. The pressure you put yourself under stimulates your adrenaline which boosts your focus and efficiency.
Each of the above aspects of gamification offers something unique. Points give you a visual count of how well you are doing, boss levels make bigger tasks more enjoyable, daily streaks inspire you to remain committed, and time limits have you becoming more productive and efficient.
It’s not necessary to incorporate all of these into your gamification plan, pick those features that appeal to you. Later on, you can add more or change out one or two, which keeps your system fresh and exciting.
Challenges to gamification
Though the concept of gamification has a lot of potential to inspire you into action, some challenges may crop up along the way. These can cause you to cry out “Game Over”, but you need to hit “Pause” rather than pull the plug.
Overemphasis on rewards
It can be thrilling to smash through your rewards, ticking off your accomplishments as you traverse through your “game”. The sad reality is that, eventually, the novelty of having your tasks gamified can fade. That leads to you losing your motivation and enthusiasm.
Instead of being so fixated on external rewards, take time to consider how you have changed as a person. With the jobs being ticked off your list, how does that make you feel inside? Reflect on your journey and see how it has caused you to grow. I think that personal growth, rather than rewards, is the more appealing feature behind gamification.
Stress from competition
Light-hearted competition amongst your peers can be stimulating, but it has the possibility of having you negatively comparing yourself to others. Now, instead of building social bonds, the connections could fray.
Also, the stress of trying to be the best individual or the top team can have you (and the other group members of a team) overextending physically, mentally, and emotionally. You’ll soon experience burnout when going down that path.
Time investment
Mobile games take a few months to develop whereas computer games require five years before the product launches. Gamification does require time. You need to figure out points systems, and levels, what are bosses you want to defeat, and which rewards are assigned to which part of your game.
If you are already limited in time, the idea of gamifying your tasks can be seen as another straw towards breaking the proverbial camel’s back. It’s up to you to decide if the effort is worth it.
Game on!
Gamifying your tasks is a creative way to turn everyday responsibilities into engaging and enjoyable activities. By leveraging strategies like point systems, streaks, storylines, and competitions, you can boost productivity and maintain commitment. However, it’s essential to balance fun with focus, ensuring gamification enhances rather than distracts from your goals.
With gamification, even the most mundane tasks can become exciting challenges, helping you stay motivated and consistently achieve your goals.
